The new Plaza Sugbo

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo went over to Cebu this week to inaugurate Plaza Sugbo, a newly rehabilitated square that encompasses Cebu City Hall and the Magellan’s Cross park. Hopefully this will set a precedent for more rehabilitation projects in the future that would help in the revitalization of the old district of Cebu City, commonly referred to as “downtown.”
The square boasts of new landscaping, brick pavements, and a much more sprawling space that are devoid of vendors and other illegal structures. Statues of historical figures such as Vicente Rama will also be erected in strategic points areas.
Below are some photos that I shot just a while ago:

I really like what the Cebu City government did with the plaza. Cities were originally created and planned for people to interact and converge. The rehabilitation of the Old Cebu is the biggest step to making Cebu truly, a world city. Uptown is not that walk-able. Cebu’s people is just as diverse as Singapore’s. More than 50% of Cebu’s population do not have cars and so I believe that the next step should be the pedestrianization of key areas in the city to lessen oil-dependent transportation means, making people like & love to walk; A good exercise for everyone and which could be Cebu’s biggest contribution to saving our environment. Economic growth & stability come from the people, not the garbage and waste we excessively produce.
Go Cebu ! Be the example and the envy of the rest of the Philippines ! Set the trend – Walk Cebu !

youre right guys, a pedestrian with good lighting at night is a good idea.
cebuanos like to walk.you can walk from cebu capitol to plaza independencia. its straight walk and cannot feel tired cause theres store in both sides. all you need is a good pair of walking shoes and money in your pocket. before i walk from fuente to plaza., piece of cake. and fuente to mj cuenco ave., still a piece of cake. cebu city govt and citizen with business owners can do that. all they need is COOPERATION for the benefit of our beautiful city. let everybody knew that cebu city is the first city in the phils. am i right or wrong ? be proud of it. its your city.
