Dalaguete establishes parish-based heritage group

Published by Emperor Karl at 5:22 am under Heritage Watch, News & Events

A heritage commission was recently organized in Dalaguete through the efforts of its parish priest and several parishioners who became the pioneering members. A mass was celebrated by Bishop Julito Cortes last May 18 to formally grace their installation. A day before their installation, members of the Cebu Archdiocesan Commission of the Cultural Heritage of the Church (CACCHC) conducted a seminar to the pioneering members regarding the importance of church patrimony and cultural heritage in general. The history of the church of Dalaguete was also presented. Three years from now, in 2011, Dalaguete will be celebrating its 300th year as a parish.

The trip to Dalaguete also afforded me the opportunity to shoot more photos in order to update my entry of Dalaguete Church in this blog. My collection now includes never before seen photos of the pipe organ, belfry clock and mechanism, rectory, etc. I have posted some below. (Just a suggestion though) I hope the lesson of the old San Carlos and Opon church would be included in such presentations or lectures (just in case it’s not being mentioned or discussed).

Opon and Recollect Church bro Overture. The Recollect church is different from the San Carlos church, hehehe..

Yup such lessons were presented during the lecture. It was Ang_Bantayanon who gave the lecture, hehehe..

Thanks for pointing that out. I found that confusing since I always thought that the San Carlos and the Recollect church where one and the same. Which one is located in front of Carbon market? Can you imagine if the Recollects thought of dismantling San Sebastian church. I’m happy that Cebu has a heritage program.

Yup, the one in front of Carbon Market, then known before as Plaza Washington or Freedom Park since it was really literally a plaza, is the Recollect church and convent. The cuartel or barracks was also located in this plaza.

I ain’t sure if the church is dedicated to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel or the Immaculate Concepcion?

The San Carlos church/chapel and school was located within the vicinity of Plaza Independencia. I think it was destroyed during World War II.

Wow now that really is a waste. Losing a heritage church and the plaza too. Making it into a market. Double whammy pala. I think I’ve been to this church since I kind of remember the market being in front of it. If it’s the same church, it couldn’t hold a candle or no comparison to the old one. Nothing personal, but the one I visited was ugly and I remember it being dirty.
